Swift Current 2014 Centennial

The door is wide open to potential ideas and opportunities for community groups and businesses to lend their support to Swift Current's Centennial celebrations in 2014.

A community meeting at the Living Sky Casino's Sky Centre on Tuesday night attracted approximately 100 people to learn more about how the community can get involved in hosting events in order to make next year's Centennial celebrations a bigger hit. Representatives from a wide array of service clubs, businesses and groups attended the evening presentation and discussion.

Travis Cuthbert, Events Coordinator of the Centennial Celebrations Committee, said they are looking outside of the committee for support in hosting a wide range of additional celebration events surrounding the June 28-29 community Homecoming planned in conjunction with Frontier Days 2014

"We can't do it without a heck of a lot of help. Maybe we've got lofty goals, but we think that Swift Current's the community that can put it together and our hope is that we can manage all the different aspects of things that hopefully will go on that weekend."

Tuesday's meeting was intended to spark ideas and interest in how a centennial theme could be added to activities during all of 2014, and specifically to give more people reasons to return home for the June 28-29 Homecoming weekend. It will be these satellite events that will reach out to a full age group of participants and provide a fuller celebration of Swift Current's past 100 years.

"Our job as the committee, and the events planning committee, is to just make sure we know who's doing what and where they're doing it, and how do we market it so that people know where and when to show up."

"Really it's a bunch of individual events that are all going to be happening around one big event, with the hope that we have the people coming out to participate in all the events."

Cuthbert noted that the Committee's vision for the community celebrations have changed, with some thought originally given to attracting a headline performer and having a single major summer celebration event.

"We've changed that a number of times and we think we've nailed it with what we've got going now," he said of their Homecoming plans.

"We really feel as though if we can get the buzz from the community and all these different organizations and businesses to really buy in and want to get involved, this could be what people remember, not the band that we happened to bring in for the Saturday night party."

Swift Current's first major Centennial event will occur on Jan. 15 when an Opening Extravaganza and Reception will be held at the Credit Union iPlex. This event will honour the past through a pageant showcasing Swift Current's vibrant arts, entertainment, culture, music and drama scenes.

"It's no secret that Swift Current has a pretty good reputation for that and we thought how better than to do that on a bigger stage," Cuthbert said of the opening celebration event they hope to sell out at the 3,000 seat iPlex.

The community is being looked to to help decide how Swift Current celebrates the present during the June 28-29 homecoming.

"It's no secret that if we don't get any responses from anybody, then it does change the dynamic of what our vision is and the magnitude of what that vision becomes."

The wrap up event is scheduled for Nov. 28, 2014 at a Winter Festival held in conjunction with the Swift Current Downtown Business Association's annual Tree Lighting.

The evening was also a chance to reach out to the business community to invite them to find ways to participate in the Centennial. The Centennial Celebrations Committee has developed a marketing and sponsorship package that they believe has good value to it. They also invited businesses to find creative ways to recognize the Centennial and promote their place in the business community.

The public is invited to visit www.swiftcurrent100.ca for additional information on how to volunteer, to share ideas with the Celebrations Committee, or to learn more about celebration events during 2014.
