A strong contingent of Swift Current residents turned out this morning to participate the inaugural local Victor Walk, joining thousands across Canada in taking a stand against child sexual abuse.

The parade began from Market Square at 10 a.m., with walkers parading through a winding route in Swift Current's downtown core.

A fundraising BBQ lunch will be hosted at Market Square starting at 11:30 a.m., where the public is invited to join event organizers and volunteers for lunch. There will be a petition available for supporters to sign in order to push for changed laws for harsher punishment for offenders and to better protect victims.

The Victor Walk is aiming to change the way Canadians understand the effects of child sexual abuse by giving a voice to those who have been affected by sexual abuse.

Swift Current's walk was held at the same time as the final hours of a high profile Victor Walk which concludes its Toronto to Ottawa journey on Parliament Hill this afternoon. Former NHLer and Child Advocate Theo Fleury was one of the ambassadors participating in the May 14 to 23 event.

“I recognize that not everyone will be able to join me in Ottawa,” said Fleury. “However, the organization of local Victor Walks ensures that there will be an opportunity for all Canadians to walk together for the same cause. We are encouraging everyone -- survivors, supporters of survivors, and child advocates -- to stand together in hopes of making a difference by getting involved in local Victor Walk events.”
