Swift Current residents will be trading their rubber boots for snow shovels tonight, as a late winter storm is forecast to hit the northern portions of Southwest Saskatchewan with another blanket of snow.
Environment Canada is currently tracking a winter storm from Alberta which has dumped over 20 centimeters of snow in some Alberta communities. If it moves into the region, the communities of Leader, Lucky Lake, and Swift Current could receive five to 10 centimeters of snow tonight, with another two to four centimeters on Friday.
The weather will be different in the Maple Creek area, as Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Shaunavon - Maple Creek - Val Marie - Cypress Hills forecast area.
"A wave of mild moist Pacific air will be pushing across Southwest Saskatchewan tonight while northerly winds usher in cold sub-freezing air at the surface. The result will be a period of freezing rain developing this evening over the Cypress Hills region. Freezing rain may be mixed with or change to ice pellets at times tonight before dissipating overnight. Travellers should be prepared for potentially icy road conditions due to freezing rain over Southwest Saskatchewan tonight," the advisory warns.
The winter weather is a dramatic turn around from Wednesday's warm weather, where Swift Current reached a daytime high of 6 Celsius, while Maple Creek was the provincial hot spot on Wednesday by climbing to 15 Celsius.
