All local calls in Saskatchewan will require the area code plus the seven-digit number in the coming months, as beginning May 11 local calls will only be completed by dialing 10 digits.
SaskTel customers will hear an automatic reminder message telling them they must add the area code for future calls when they dial only seven digits between February 25 to May 11. While SaskTel will automatically complete seven-digit dialed calls up until May 11 date, all calls placed starting May 12 will be connected only when the area code is included.
People sending texts will also be required to utilize 10-digit dialing to reach the person they wish to text. Currenly, SaskTel's network adds the 306 area code if a person enters only seven-digits to send a message. Beginning May 11, if you enter only seven digits to send a text message, you will receive a message indicating the text message cannot be transmitted and that you must add the area code in order to complete the message. You will then be prompted to program your device to handle 10-digits for future text messages.
Special numbers including 911, 611 and 411 will still be accessed through three digit dialing.
SaskTel's network has already been enabled to accommodate 10 digit local dialing. SaskTel is also advising customers they should update programmed numbers by ensuring an area code is included in their telecommunications equipment, such as: home phones, cell phones, fax machines, modems, equipment for the hearing impaired, home security systems, etc.
The effective date for Saskatchewan's new 639 area code is May 25, with newly assigned phone numbers containing either the 306 or 639 area code regardless of location.
