A sexual assault charge has been stayed against a former Swift Current teacher in connection to an incident dating back to 2011.

The Crown opted to stay the charges against Klaus Froese in advance of a scheduled preliminary trial on Tuesday.

"As a Crown we will often review each of the files that we prosecute and in this case during that review, prior to trial, a determination was made that this matter was no longer prosecutable," Senior Crown Prosecutor Steve Kritzer said.

The Swift Current City RCMP Detachment originally laid the charged after an investigation following a sexual assault complaint received on Dec 6, 2011. RCMP determined there were grounds to lay a charge after conducting several interviews.

Froese, 52, a former teacher at O.M. Irwin School, had originally been facing a trial date on May 25 before a decision was made to hold a preliminary hearing on Oct. 9.

"At this point in time the Crown has entered a stay on the charge. That doesn't mean the charge is gone at this time. There's still a one year window where that charge can be reinstated," Kritzer added.
