Quick action by area fire crews and farm neighbours helped contain a fire near the Wymark Hutterite Colony earlier this afternoon.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the blaze during the mid afternoon hours, with both the Swift Current Fire Department and RM of Swift Current Fire Department sending equipment to help fight the blaze. Area volunteer fire fighters were also involved in battling the blaze. With the assistance of farm equipment and graders the crews were able to stop the fire from crossing a grid road and spreading further.

High wind speeds and extremely dry conditions were complicating fire fighting efforts.

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Warning calling for wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometers per hour expected late this afternoon into the early evening hours. Swift Current's weather station had recorded wind gusts in the mid 60 kilometer per hour range while crews fought the fire south of the city.
