An Emergency Measures Organization exercise unfolded at the Swift Current Airport Sept. 6 that involved the City of Swift Current Fire Department, Rural Municipality #137 Fire Department, EMS and RCMP as key responders, with additional participation by the Armed Forces, Transportation Safety Board of Canada, NAV Canada, STARS Air Ambulance and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Office.

The exercise centered around the staged collision of two aircraft with two different crash sites, each requiring simulated victim and fire responses. There were three simulated fatalities and 17 simulated injuries.

The purpose of the EMO exercise was to evaluate the Inter-Agency Communication and Incident Command Systems. The exercise fulfilled the City’s requirements for testing its emergency plan, and served as one of the Cypress Health Region’s requirements for accreditation.
