Submitted: A fundraising pancake breakfast to be held in Val Marie on Saturday September 1 from 9:00 am until noon will round off a summer of fundraising raffle ticket sales, barbecues and a music night by the Val Marie Heritage, Culture, & Youth Elevator Committee.
The Val Marie Elevator Committee’s major project this year is raffling off a wood-frame cabin built of recycled lumber from the elevator’s old Annex, torn down for safety reasons in 2010. Built entirely by volunteer labour, the cabin is log-sided and metal roofed. A maximum of just 1,000 raffle tickets will be sold, ending during the September 1 pancake breakfast, just in time for the winning draw at noon that same day.
Other prizes include a $290 gas barbecue donated by Evans Bros Home Hardware and a $100 gift certificate from Pioneer Co-op, both of Swift Current.
Val Marie’s Elevator Committee is raising funds to re-roof and re-shingle its heritage elevator, one of the last few wood crib grain elevators left in Saskatchewan. The Committee has already begun the shingling, thanks in part to a matching grant from the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, but more money is needed. This village of 100 people has shown a real commitment to its past and its future, supporting such local improvements as the elevator project, a new village square, renovating the Val Marie Rink/indoor Rodeo grounds, and beginning a project to develop an ecomuseum for Prairie Wind and Silver Sage, the municipal museum/gift shop/espresso bar.
Raffle tickets still remaining are only $50 and can be purchased through the Val Marie Village office at www.villageofvalmarie.ca, telephone 306-298-2022, or call Grasslands Gallery in Val Marie at 298-7782 for more information.
