After a year long delay, construction equipment is now rolling along Highway #32.
After delays caused by tendering, crews finally began work on May 4, with a projected completion date of August 2010. The project will result in the re-construction of the sub grade as well as adding a surfacing structure on the portion of Highway #2 from east of the Abbey Access Road to just west of Lancer. The estimated cost of the project is $10.9 million.
"Due to environmental concerns there were delays on year one of our government's commitment to rebuild Highway 32 between Shackelton and Prelate, however, we are still on track for completing the whole corridor," stated Cypress Hills MLA Wayne Elhard. "I want to emphasize that it was only the first phase of the project that was delayed. I am very pleased to see construction move forward."
Traffic disruptions will occur during construction, and motorists are reminded that theyre may be areas where loose stones, fresh oil and equipment will be encountered. Traffic may also be restricted to one lane through the construction areas, with flag persons notifying motorists of these zones.
