The Swift Current Fire Department want you to have a safe barbecue season and has some safety tips for you to consider when using your barbecue this summer.
At the start of the season you should always check the burners, fittings and hoses for wear or cracks.
You should also test your barbecue for leaks. You can do this by using a soapy solution and spreading it along connections, joints, valves and along the hose. if you see bubbles forming or you smell gas, you have a leak. never test for leaks with a match or lighter.
You must use your barbecue in a well-ventilated area at least 1.5 metres away from buildings and make sure to keep children and away.
Always have the lid up when you are lighting your barbecue. If it does not light on your first attempt, turn the burner off and wait five minutes before trying again. Turn off the propane tank when you are not using it.
