Editor:
I am writing this with the intention of strengthening communication between neighbors in our community. I recently lost my nine month old puppy Willow to strychnine poisoning. I live on an acreage surrounded by farmland. One evening Willow wandered a little across the driveway. We called her in right away but, later that evening, she had a seizure and died. We later discovered that strychnine was being used, for gophers, on the field not 40 yards from our door.
I am not going to climb on a soapbox about the dangers of strychnine or how crazy it is that this stuff is still legal. What I would like to do is appeal to anyone and everyone who is using any kind of poison or hazardous materials, to please take a couple of extra minutes of your time to inform the people around you of your plans.
Not only will this kind gesture endear you to your neighbors, it may also prevent the senseless death of someone else's beloved family pet.
