The Cypress Health Region’s Child and Youth Mental Health & Addictions team will be joining parents across the region’s communities via a videoconferencing link to share a series of parent education sessions on a variety of topics. Using the health region’s Telehealth network, the sessions will be simultaneously broadcast into ten communities by the same presenter.
“Parenting is always a challenging responsibility and there are parenting classes regularly offered to inform and support parents around day to day issues,” said Peggy Cunningham, Cypress Health’s Program Supervisor for Child & Youth Mental Health. “However, parents sometimes require an understanding and skill level that goes beyond the more typical challenges, and these information sessions are directed at those parents of children and youth whose needs exceed those of the basic parenting strategies.”
Cunningham added that the sessions will address the unique challenges that children and youth can present. “They can experience intense emotional states like depression or anxiety, engage in behaviours like aggression and defiance, harm themselves through cutting, or use alcohol and drugs,” mentioned Cunningham. ‘We will offer some practical parenting strategies to address these and similar concerns.”
The series of five educational sessions will begin on October 21st and will be held during the lunch hour from noon to 1 p.m., in an attempt to provide the presentations during a time that has been suggested by parents as a good opportunity for them to attend. Participants will be encouraged to enjoy their lunch break while watching the live presentation via a videoconferencing link at the local health facilities that have the Telehealth capability. Each one-hour session will define the presenting issues more clearly and provide practical parenting strategies to help parents support their children.
Some of the prominent issues facing parents will be presented on during the series:
- Oct. 21 – ‘Parenting the Child/Youth with Difficult Behaviour’; registration deadline Oct. 16.
- Nov. 4 – ‘Parenting the Anxious Child/Youth’; registration deadline Oct. 30.
- Nov. 18 – ‘Parenting the Depressed Child/Youth’; registration deadline Nov. 13.
- Nov. 25 – ‘Parenting the Self-Harming Child/Youth’; registration deadline Nov. 20.
- Dec. 2 – ‘Parenting the Addicted Child/Youth’; registration deadline Nov. 27.
The sessions will be broadcast from Swift Current and will be available via Telehealth in the communities of Cabri, Eastend, Gull Lake, Herbert, Leader, Mankota, Maple Creek, Ponteix, and Shaunavon. Parents are encouraged to attend any of the sessions they feel will be of benefit to them.
Advance registration is required in order to guarantee that the Telehealth network will be available in all communities. Those interested are asked to call 306.778.5444 to ensure that you are able to attend the site closest to you – location details will be provided to you upon registering.
