Award-winning author Candace Savage will be the first author in the exciting 2013/14 Write Out Loud series at the Lyric Theatre, taking to the stage on Sept. 18.
Savage was born in Alberta and has enjoyed a long and storied career as the writer of more than two dozen nonfiction books on a wide variety of subjects and genres. Blessed with an insatiable curiosity, she has written historical and biographical studies for both adults and young readers, explored near space in Aurora, insect social life in Bees, and grassland conservation in Prairie: A Natural History.
Her most recent book, and the focus of her presentation at the Lyric, is A Geography of Blood, a book that has garnered much critical praise as well as national and local awards.
A Geography of Blood is a combination of memoir, travelogue and historical narrative. It exposes a forgotten part of our national and local history, a difficult and often disturbing piece of the history of the settlement of the prairies, "the nightmare side of Canada's national dream". The book grew out of a visit in 2000 to Eastend, "a speck in the Big Empty of the North American outback" and it has quickly become one of her best known works.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the Sept. 18 Write Out Loud session, with the program to begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
