Benson and Funk earn bronze medals at Canada-Wide Science Fair

Jordan Funk, a Grade 7 student at O.M. Irwin School, had a successful debut at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, capturing a bronze medal in the Junior Innovation division for his project You Can’t Beat Free Heat. Grade 12 Hazlet School student Nathan Benson was saluted with a bronze medal in the Senior discovery category for his project Long Term Effects of Hyper Gravity on Plant Growth.

Both Chinook School Division students attending the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge earned bronze medals for their impressive projects.

Grade 12 Hazlet School student Nathan Benson was saluted with a bronze medal in the Senior discovery category for his project Long Term Effects of Hyper Gravity on Plant Growth. Along with his excellence award, he earned a $1,000 entrance scholarship from the University of Ottawa plus a $1,000 entrance scholarship from Western University.

Benson's project had claimed first place overall at Chinook's 2013 Science Fair back in March and this was his second trip to the national science fair. Last year, Benson and fellow Hazlet School student Alex Sletten advanced to the 2012 Canada Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI for their project Coil Guns or Synchronous Linear Induction Motors.

Jordan Funk had a successful debut at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, capturing a bronze medal in the Junior Innovation division. Funk, a Grade 7 student at O.M. Irwin Middle Years School, was recognized for his project You Can’t Beat Free Heat, a working model which utilized used shower water to heat a model bathroom floors plus using a heat exchanger to reclaim heat. His first-ever trip to the national science fair not only earned him an excellence award bronze medal but also a $1,000 entrance scholarship from Western University.
