The Swift Current Allied Arts Council is pleased that the sixth performance for the 2012–2013 season of Stars for Saskatchewan will be Ballet Jörgen Canada presenting the world’s most renowned classical ballet, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake on March 1 at 8 p.m. Given the demand for tickets for this year’s series, the Arts Council has arranged for second shows for a limited number of concerts in the series including an additional performance of Swan Lake by Ballet Jörgen on March 2 at 2 p.m.
To celebrate Ballet Jörgen Canada’s 25th Anniversary Season, Artistic Director and CEO Bengt Jörgen has re-envisioned the classical and dramatic Swan Lake, adding a hint of Canadian heritage as is often a sign of his work. While this major new production of Swan Lake showcases the extraordinary beauty of traditional ballet in its purest form, Jörgen re-imagines it in the picturesque seascape of the Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. The elaborate sets are designed by Camellia Koo, reflecting the beauty of Canada’s national heritage park and providing a dramatic backdrop to Robert Doyle’s 17th century costume designs. Doyle is thrilled to be involved in this unique rendition of Swan Lake, having worked on the original restoration project of the Fortress of Louisbourg. Swan Lake premiered on Sept. 28 at the Flato Markham Theatre for the Performing Arts.
While on the road, dancers and staff will engage beyond the performance events with a number of community events and educational programs for children, youth and the general community. Local performers will be included in each performance.
“Thousands of children from across Canada participate in BJC’s programs. We are committed to bringing dance into the classrooms and closer to young people throughout the country,” says Bengt Jörgen.
