Swift Current will be hosting one of the first Motorcycle Ride For Dad events of 2013 after being named the 30th chapter in a national network of groups hosting events in support of fighting prostate cancer.
Swift Current's first annual Ride For Dad will be held on June 8 from the Living Sky Casino, with motorcycle riders parading through Swift Current, Hodgeville, Hazenmore and Cadillac during this large fundraiser which is expected to attract over 200 riders.
There are a dozen volunteers on the local organizing committee who are involved in promoting the event which raised money for prostate cancer research and awareness through the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation.
Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian men, with an estimated one in seven developing prostate cancer during their lifetime. An estimated 24,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year, with 4,300 Canadian men dying from it.
Organizers are currently looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of duties during the June 8 event, and they are also canvassing Swift Current and Southwest businesses to secure sponsors for the event. Tom Kehoe is serving as the sponsorship coordinator and can be reached at 306-773-3131 or via email at scmrfd@shaw.ca.
Since beginning with a single ride in 2000, the Motorcycle Ride For Dad has gone national and has successfully raised over $9 million in the fight against prostate cancer. Net proceeds from Ride For Dad events across Canada are distributed by the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation on behalf of the Ride For Dad, to benefit the region where the funds are raised by funding public awareness campaigns and cutting edge research.
Additional details of the event can be located at ridefordad.ca or by viewing the Swift Current Motorcycle Ride For Dad facebook page.
