Swift Current's Recreation and Parks Department is challenging community residents to pursue a healthier lifestyle by hosting a Wellness Challenge to kickoff 2013.
The Wellness Challenge runs from Jan. 14 to Feb. 14, with participants earning nutrition points and fitness points for their business or organization team total. Teams must register by Jan. 9, with entries open to workplace groups, organizations or clubs.
The Challenge involves each team member keeping track of daily wellness points. In the area of nutrition, one daily point is awarded for each “Healthy Eating Day” (defined by each individual, but could be based on the Canadian Food Guide or many other programs). A maximum weekly total of six points can be earned for each participant, with one day a week allowed as a cheat day. Each team member can earn up to a maximum of 12 fitness points each week, with one point awarded for each 30 mins of physical activity/exercise. The recommended daily activity level for the challenge is one hour, with one rest day per week.
The team captain for each entry is to record weekly team points, and compile the total team points each week and then provide a final team total at the end of the challenge.
Prizes will be awarded to the top five overall individuals, plus the team earning the highest point average will also be presented with a prize.
Each participating business or organization can also earn a recognition certificate based on the percentage of people participating. A gold certificate will be presented for business or organizations with a 75 per cent participation level, with silver recognition given for 50 per cent participation, and bronze for 25 per cent or less participation.
Interested participants are asked to register their entires with v.choofoo@swiftcurrent.ca by Wednesday. Entries should include a team name, organization, number of participants, name of a team captain, as well as the number of possible participants.
