The Lyric Theatre’s Christmas Matinee is a tradition that started many decades ago. Just before Christmas every year, the theatre would show a Christmas movie for the children of the city. To keep this tradition alive, the Lyric is presenting a Christmas movie on Dec. 15 and 16 to help get everyone excited for the holidays.

“This children's event is one of our favourites, and we are always pleased to see such a great crowd of young children,” said Executive Director Erin Gehl. “It’s a great way to start the holiday season.”

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the movie begins both afternoons at 2 p.m. There is also an afternoon craft sponsored by the Swift Current Kiwanis Club, with children able to create a snow person from a fluffy paint roller sleeve. Each child who attends will also receive a gift bag.

Santa himself makes an appearance to visit with the children, followed by the feature presentation: A Muppet Family Christmas, which runs about 45 minutes.

A warm Yuletide special, A Muppet Family Christmas pairs the Muppet gang with the perennial favorite Sesame Street cast for a holiday celebration.

Eight holiday tunes are featured in the show, including the Muppet Band’s rousing "Jingle Bell Rock" and Big Bird's sweet rendition of "The Christmas Song."

Tickets are $5 and go on sale at Pharmasave on Dec. 3.

Presenting sponsors are Innovation Credit Union, Dickson Agencies and Innovative Financial Strategies.
