If you have ever seen a really bad movie and though you could do better, give it a try because that was the inspiration behind the made-in-Swift-Current low budget horror flik Zombageddon: The Movie.
The trio Devon Oman, Bob Taylor and Logan Demorest were watching a one-star B movie and dreamed up the idea of putting together a zombie movie and the movie snowballed into a larger project than any of them had dreamed.
And by the time they had completed three months of weekend filming, two months of editing and final production, their one hour and 26 minute long zombie apocalypse movie was just the right mix of gore and humour. There were screams, there was laughter, and the audience was on the edge of their seats during the Halloween world premier of Zombageddon: The Movie.
Filmed on a miniscule budget, the trio were pleased their large screen production turned out so well.
"We met our goal! We made a movie! When we were with Logan Demorest and we watched The Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned. We said 'we could make a movie that's better than this.' And guess what, we did. We actually succeeded in making a movie that was better," Taylor said.
"I'd have to say we did," Oman agreed. "They took it too serious I think. We didn't really take it too serious. That's why it had the whole Grindhouse feeling to it. And the trailers."
While both Oman and Taylor were nervous as more and more people streamed into the Sky Centre for the premier, they were happy with the reaction from the live audience.
"It was fun. I love watching movies with a live audience. And it makes the experience a lot better," Oman said.
"You can hear the parts that they like, the parts that they react to. When we're watching, we wrote it so we think it's kind of funny, but when you see watching and they laugh you know we at least got that right. It was a lot of fun," Taylor added.
Admittedly, both thought there were things they could have changed in the final product.
"There was a couple of things when I were watching, I though ooohh," Taylor said. "It is a low budget movie. It was a Grindhouse-type of movie, so that sort of stuff is forgivable."
"I shook my head sometimes, but it's something that's a learning process for us. We've made movies before, but nothing this big."
The fun evening was a fun pay off for all the hours of work everyone put into the project.
"This whole experience, I'm glad it's done. It was a blast but I'm glad the whole thing is over. We raised a lot of money for the SPCA," Taylor pointed out.
All three were tight lipped on their plans regarding their new movie plans, but confirmed some new ideas are being throwing around.
"This is definitely something that's going to be done again," Taylor said.
