The Living Sky Casino is brightening winter and celebrating culture with a Round Dance at the Sky Centre on Feb. 18, and the public is invited to share in this traditional winter social event.
Round Dances are traditionally held during the typically long, cold months of winter, when people gather indoors to support one another and attract positive energy to brighten short days.
The event begins with a Pipe Ceremony and a Blessing of the Feast at 5 p.m., where guests can expect to sample traditional First Nations foods such as wild meats and fowl, berries, soups and bannock as well as contemporary foods. This is a sacred meal where participants can pray and prepare a plate to feed and honour those who have passed on, as well as to mourn and heal, so photos are not appropriate during this time.
When the singing begins, singers generally use hand held drums rather than the large drums seen at pow wows. The Stickman ensures that the round dance proceeds in accordance with traditions and protocol.
There will also be a Midnight Lunch served and a Giveaway Special.
Emcees are Howard Walker and Sandford Strongarm. The Stickman is Bradley Goodwill.
There is no charge for this event. For more information, contact Trevor Marion at 778-5759.
