Jerrod Schafer has been acclaimed as Swift Current Mayor but there is a crowded race for City Council with 11 candidates running in the Oct. 24 municipal election.

Today's 4 p.m. deadline came and went without a challenger for Schafer, so he will be serving a second term as Swift Current Mayor until 2016.

All six incumbent council members have opted to seek re-election, with five rookie candidates challenging the veteran councillors.

New candidates are Ron Toles, Joe Collinson, Pat Friesen, Keleah Ostrander and Jayson Sletten. Incumbents seeking to return to council are George Bowditch, Gord Budd, Tim Bugera, Dan Martens, Denis Perrault and deputy mayor Ryan Plewis.

Two individuals were acclaimed to the Separate School Board, with Lucy Gehl of Subdivision 1 and Mary Jane Benesh of Subdivision 2 selected.

The Chinook School Division will have a race for Subdivision 8 (Swift Current), with incumbents Cassandra Appelgren, Randy Beler and Tim Ramage in the running with new candidate Jim Dekowny for three subdivision seats on the Chinook School Board.
