Swift Current will host their 12th annual Relay For Life event at Riverside Park on June 7, at 7 p.m. We will be kicking off this year’s Relay For Life event in the BMO courtyard at 7 p.m. on May 8th.
“The atmosphere at Relay for Life is one of kinship. As survivors we gather to say, ‘I went through something hard and I made it’. It is empowering and also a time of deep reflection,” said Sheila Sommerfeld, local cancer survivor and speaker at the 2014 Swift Current kickoff event. “We may not know each other, but we do know that we have been on a challenging health journey that was not of our choosing and we are here ... alive and celebrating life together!”
With 20 teams, 270 participants, 151 survivors and 40 volunteers, the Swift Current Relay for Life event in 2013 raised a total of $82,166. These life-saving funds have helped the Canadian Cancer Society lead cancer research to better prevent cancer, influence public policy for quality cancer care everywhere in Canada, focus support programs towards the crucial needs of patients and caregivers, and engage more Canadians in the fight against cancer.
Teams of six to 15 people will gather together for an unforgettable overnight journey. The participants who attend will be joining a global movement that brings together more than 200,000 people throughout Canada each year. This inspiring event involves people who participate in a 12-hour, overnight, non-competitive relay. It’s a night to celebrate cancer survivors, honor and remember loved ones, and a way for each of us to fight back against cancer.
Join us on May 8th at 7 p.m. at the BMO courtyard to kick off this year’s event. Everyone is invited to start a team, join a team, register as a volunteer, or register to participate in the Survivors’ Victory Lap.
