SPCA Swift Current operates a successful used bookstore which is one of its primary fundraisers.

The first bookstore started in 1976 in a corner of the Co-op Store on Central Avenue. It moved into its own small building in 1989 and finally to its present location at #37 1st Ave. N.E. in 2005.

The Bookstore has housed some 15,000 plus books, all of which have been, and continue to be, donated.

For anyone who still enjoys the feel of a book in their hands, the SPCA Bookstore is the ideal place to be. Prices are 50 per cent or more off the list price, and most hardcover fiction books are $2 or less. You can't get books for your e-reader for those prices.

Their major collections are Fiction, Romance and Mystery. The Children's books and Westerns are also very popular. The story also boasts Canadiana, Science Fiction, Biographies, Crafts, Gardening, How-To-Books, Travel books, Dictionaries, Magazines (no more than one year old), and Puzzles. There is also a sizeable collection of old books that are popular with collectors.

The Bookstore likes to encourage repeat customers by offering a trade back system. Paperback books can generally be traded back to the bookstore at a rate of two for one.

The Bookstore has an extensive Clearance Corner which holds books of all genres, prices at 50 cents or less. There is often Sale Packs of multiple books by a single author, or Bulk Bags of 24 Romance novels for $3. This spring there will be an offering of Book Club packs at a discounted price.

Donations are welcome at all times, and we encourage the public to bring their gently used books down to the store. In general, the books should be no more than eight years old, although we accept Westerns and Children's books of any age.

The SPCA is encouraging more people to visit their Bookstore. Currently, they boast a fairly small but very loyal base of patrons. Once people discover the SPCA Used Bookstore, and experience the joy of finding a great book at a bargain price, they make a point of coming back again and again. Unfortunately, the bookstore doesn't have a budget for advertising, which makes it difficult to get the word out.

The SPCA Animal Shelter does maintain a Facebook page, which frequently has photos and announcements of sales or specials at the Bookstore.

The Swift Current SPCA website (www.spcaswiftcurrent.com) also has information on the Bookstore and its initiatives.

Because the SPCA Animal Shelter is experiencing financial difficulties, the Bookstore hopes to sell more books by maintaining a presence at public events such as Market Square and the Gun and Hobby Show. A table of books will also be available when the SPCA has Pet Adoptions Fairs at the Swift Current Mall or at Frontier Days.

The Used Bookstore is managed and run entirely by volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering for a number of years. The volunteers generally work two hours shifts, processing donations, shelving books, as well as selling books. The project has been a reliable and important stream of revenue for the SPCA Animal Shelter.
