Applications are now being taken for a Mexico Missions trip in February 2014 which will construct a facility similar to previous builds done by the group in the Vincente Guerrero area of Mexico.

By Roxana Tiefenbach

For 18 years, the Mexico Missions trip called Homes of Hope and/or Schools of Hope has been a part of our communities.

You or your neighbours or young people from the area have experienced the joy of giving and the benefits received in doing so. Hopefully that is going to continue in 2014.

The names of Harold and Pearl Plato have long been associated with these mission trips each February. Although they have stepped back from this role and have now moved to Alberta, a group of leaders, coordinated by Shane Andrus, is working to continue the good work that these two dedicated people have invested in Mexico Missions of the past.

It has taken a little longer than was hoped to be ready for applicants but the time has come. Application forms are now available through area churches. The deadline for applications is Dec. 20th. Plans are to leave Feb. 14, 2014, with the intent to return to the Vincente Guerrero area of Mexico, a few hours drive south of the United States/Mexico border. The return date is planned for Feb. 23rd.

At this time the structure to be built is unconfirmed but you can be assured that whatever it is, be it home or school or community center, the people of the area will be glad to have the use of the new facility. Past participants can easily testify to the gratefulness of the Mexican people of the Vincente Guerrero area. They are anticipating with hope and prayers for the bus to arrive, bringing some familiar and some new faces to signal the possibility that a new structure will be built for their use.

The planning committee seeks to retain all of the best parts of past trips even though some changes are inevitable. Harold and Pearl will not be leaders but have not ruled out the possibility of participating in 2014. With or without them, they would be the first ones to cheer loudly that the building of homes, schools and communities will continue into the future. They have invested so much of their time and efforts in the past, the benefits of which can and will continue into 2014 and beyond.

The 2014 team will travel by bus with capable drivers, in a similar manner of past trips, and again stay in a safe environment in the area of the build. The leadership team is looking for applicants willing to be part of something new even as they draw experience from the many successful trips of the past. Will you apply and be part of the 2014 Mission?

All persons aged 15 and over will be considered. Experience in building is not necessary but willing to work as a team member is. We all have many gifts and talents which can be put to use for the benefit of someone else. Please seriously consider being part of the 2014 team.

And don’t forget to mark your calendar to set aside Feb. 1st for the fundraising evening in Burstall. Wonderful food and many items up for auction will be offered to raise funds toward the 2014 Mission trip perhaps in conjunction with Burstall Youth Memorial Incorporated (BYMI), the organization that has provided transportation for all of the trips of the past. Previous trips have travelled approximately 6,000 kilometers each year and worn out two buses over the years. BYMI currently faces the need of a new bus. The Mexico Mission 2014 has made plans to move ahead amidst and inspite of these transportation issues because the leadership team knows we can't get to where God wants us to be without transportation.

Plan to be a part of Mexico Mission 2014. You are needed.
