The Swift Current Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association hosts the 17th Annual Jimmy Richardson Walk for Wellness on Sept. 14.
The CMHA invites individuals, organizations and businesses to make mental health a priority in 2013 and participate as teams or individually in the fundraiser named in memory of Jimmy Richardson, an enthusiastic supporter of the Walk for Wellness and the CMHA.
Proceeds go toward helping upgrade the organization’s program vehicle used to transport participants on outings provided through the local Drop-in Centre. The current 20-year-old vehicle breaks down frequently and has outlived its usefulness.
The Centre is a key source of support for individuals who often feel isolated in their community. It provides programming for about 45 clients experiencing long-term mental illness.
Services include vocational programs involving low stress work placements, recovery programs offering basic life skills and self esteem support, and social and recreational programs. The Centre also offers clients nutritious breakfasts and lunches five days a week.
Participants are asked to return their pledge sheets to the Drop-In Centre at 176 4th NW at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Set for 11 a.m., the leisurely walk makes its way to Market Square in downtown Swift Current. A barbeque lunch will be provided for all participants following the walk.
