Swift Current Centennial Committee searching for old photos

The Swift Current Centennial Committee is calling on the public to share their treasure troves of vintage photos and movies which showcase Swift Current's history.

In order to visually show Swift Current's rich history, the committee is asking people to search boxes of old photographs and view vintage 8mm movies and share their historical material.

The committee is hoping to find a wide selection of photos featuring well-known buildings, landmarks, and events, but also candid moments in the lives of the ordinary citizens that were a part of Swift Current’s history.

They also have a wish-list of material they are hoping to find in order to better highlight each decade. Their wish list includes:

1910s: 11th Ave, members of the Board of Trade, City Council; Swift Current soldiers in World War I; copies of real estate ads or maps from this era.

1920s: Buildings and churches erected in the 20s; Law Enforcement; Lyric Theatre and all other theatres in Swift Current; sports activities.

1930s: Businesses and individuals during the Dirty 30s; the “On to Ottawa” trek; Frontier Days, Bearded City, and early members of the Kinetic Club.

1940s: The British Army Training Camp stationed at the airport during World War II (SFTS Airbase #39); announcement of the end of the war; veterans and war brides; post war; hospital, doctors and nurses.  

1950s: The horse plant; CJFB Television Station; the Boys Band; cars in Swift Current.

1960s: Chamber of Commerce; RC Dahl; businesses; the Civic Centre and it’s opening celebrations; the Stockade; police officers.

1970s: Billy Buffalo; ’76 Summer Games and sports in the 70’s.

1980s: Folkorama; Western Canadian Fiddlers Championship and Old Time Fiddlers; Broncos and 1989 Memorial Cup.

1990: Swift Current Indians; Little Theatre.

All originals will be scanned or converted and returned to their original owners.
