Campaign platforms have been released fast and furious by all three main parties during the opening week of the provincial election campaign.
In their latest platform release on Wednesday, Saskatchewan Party Leader Brad Wall unveiled a plan to fix highways and improve municipal streets. Funding for this initiation would come through the dedication of all of the fuel tax collected to highways and transportation infrastructure, plus using $140 million from the NDP government's recent $395 million sale of the NewGrade upgrader to fund highway and municipal road construction.
The SaskParty has also unveiled a plan to eliminate the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on the sale of used cars and trucks; delivering significant property tax relief to both homeowners and farmers by doubling the education property tax rebate over the next four years; a prescription drug plan which would include an extended $15 cap to children, and a new tuition rebate plan of up to $20,000 in tuition costs for post-secondary grads.
NDP Leader Lorne Calvert's latest platform announcement was Wednesday's unveiling of a plan to create 10,000 more training opportunities to meet the growing need for well educated and highly skilled workers in Saskatchewan. The NDP have also rolled out a Universal Drug Plan which caps prescriptions at $15, a refundable provincial income tax credit on education property tax for both homeowners and renters, a university tuition cut of $10,000 in the 2008-09 school year.
The Saskatchewan Liberal Party and leader David Karwacki are placing a number of education issues in the front of their campaign. On Wednesday they unveiled his plan to get at-risk kids in school. Karwacki started the second week of his campaign by stressing the importance of making schools the heart of our communities. He also highlighted the Liberal pre-election pledge to completely phase out education property taxes on residential properties.
