The arrival of 22 newborn Bison calves has added to the herd roaming throughout the Old Man on his Back Prairie and Heritage conservation area.

There are now a total of 92 bison in the herd, which started with 50 Plains Bison being released by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2003. The 22 calves were born between May 9 and 22, and several more births are expected in the coming weeks.

The new arrivals are the third generation of bison at the grasslands site in Southwest Saskatchewan.

The bison at the Old Man on his Back Prairie and Heritage conservation area are also one of 12 conservation herds across North America which are involved in an international bison genetics project conducted by Texas A&M University. The genetic study shows the entire herd of Plans Bison at OMB is free of cattle genes, increasing the herd's value for conservation and as a genetic source for other conservation herds.
