Province rebating 50 per cent of gopher control costs

A rebate program to cover a portion of gopher control expenses was delivered by the provincial government last Thursday.

Agricultural Minister Bob Bjornerud was in Swift Current on Oct. 16 to announce a 50 per cent rebate to producers and Rural Municipalities for their expenses used to fight the gopher problem across the province.

It is estimated the program will return $3 million to producers and RMs, approximately half of the estimated $6 million which has been spent on gopher control. The one-time program will re-pay half of the cost of gopher control products purchased and used between and Aug. 1, 2007 and Oct. 1, 2008.

"The Southwest is about 75 per cent of the dollars that we're announcing today will come down to this area, of course that fit in with the drought area to a great degree, but this is a province wide program. Up in the Northwest there's some problems up there, and then there's spots throughout the province where there's high populations of gophers, but nothing like there is down here in the Southwest corner," Bjornerud said during Thursday's press conference.

SARM President Dave Marit feels the program will be a benefit to Saskatchewan producers, and he noted that some producers have spent between $30,000 and $50,000 to fight gophers on their land, and some RMs have spent in excess of $100,000 in gopher control.

"On behalf of SARM, I really do want to thank the SaskParty government and you Minister Bjornerud for taking a lead on this very serious situation that we've had, not only in the Southwest but in other parts of the province. It has really put a financial burden on some of our farmers and ranchers, and some of our municipalities," Marit said.

Program application forms are now available on-line, from RM offices, Ministry of Agriculture Regional Offices, plus via the 1-866-947-9113. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2009.
