So being in the Sales business one would wonder why would I try and tackle this question? Well I have noticed, like most who are older than me, that when I go to do any purchasing when I use my debit card the same thing happens. I give my card to the person at the till, they process the amount needed, then they either A: Stick my card in the top of the debit, or B: place it on the counter while I stick my hand out to take it back. Now most people in the "New Customer Service" think that it's ok to place my card on the counter and leave me with my hand hanging in the air. I tactfully withdraw my hand then I start to process the following: I have severe Arthritis in my hands. I can not pick the card up with one hand so I have to put the debit machine down to pick up my card. The wonderful person on the other side of the counter, oblivious to my condition states:" you need to say OK for the payment to go through." Thank you for stating the obvious. By the way, those who don't say anything just glare at me as I pick up the card using both hands because I am delaying the other customers from being served.
Well here is an OLD and tried thing to avoid having delays. Take a second out of your day and hand the card to the person you are "serving". This will allow them to quickly place their card away and allow the flow of business to occur. I mean it only takes a second and I can tell you it would be appreciated by more than you know.
I spent the first 12 years of my working career in the hospitality industry and I made GREAT tips by doing the little things. Your customers know what service is. All you have to do is show you understand with the little things.
So remember, when the hand is out it usually means "Please place the card there".
Those are my thoughts.
