An increase of 30 per cent in the number of participants made the 2009 Swift Current MS Walk a success.

Sunday's walk attracted a total of 146 walkers, with the participants raising approximately $22,000 during the afternoon.

For the second straight year the "Beechy Babes" earned the distinction of being the top fundraising team, collecting just under $10, 000 for the fight against MS.

May is MS Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight this central nervous system disease which is the most common neurological disease effecting Canadian young adults. Most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, an estimated 55,000 to 75,000 Canadians have MS.

Saskatchewan has a high incidence rate of MS, with approximately 3,500 individuals in the province diagnosed with MS.

Swift Current City Council proclaimed May 10 to 16 as MS Awareness Week during their May 5 meeting.

The Beechy Babes were saluted as the top fundraising team during Sunday's MS Walk in Swift Current, raising just under $10,000. The Elmwood Golf and Country Club donated a Golf Cart for the team captain of the Beechy Babes so she could participate in the walk this year, as her legs are not strong enough to walk that far anymore due to her MS.
